Ceramides: What They Are and Why Your Skin Needs Them

Ceramides make up roughly 50% of your skin barrier. When they deplete — from age, harsh cleansers, or over-exfoliation — everything breaks down. Here’s what they actually are and how to get them back.

Most people see ‘ceramide NP’ on a moisturizer label and assume it’s a marketing ingredient — something that sounds science-y and means nothing. It isn’t. Ceramides make up roughly 50% of your skin barrier. Without enough of them, nothing else in your routine works the way it should.

What Ceramides Actually Are

Ceramides are lipid molecules — essentially fats — that your skin produces naturally. They live in the outermost layer of your skin, the stratum corneum, and they serve one critical function: they fill the space between skin cells and hold everything together.

The standard model for understanding this is ‘brick and mortar.’ Your skin cells are the bricks. Ceramides — along with cholesterol and fatty acids — are the mortar. That mortar isn’t decorative. It’s structural. It keeps the wall intact, keeps water from evaporating out, and keeps irritants from getting in.

Harsh cleansers strip ceramides along with dirt and oil. A cleanser that leaves your skin tight and squeaky clean is almost certainly taking lipids with it.

Over-exfoliation does the same thing. Chemical exfoliants (AHAs, BHAs) dissolve the bonds between dead skin cells to speed turnover. Overdo it, and you’re also eroding the lipid matrix in healthy layers underneath.

Environmental factors — hot showers, cold dry air, low humidity, winter heating — all accelerate water loss from skin that’s already lipid-depleted, making the deficit worse.

Each of these alone is manageable. Several of them together, over months or years, add up.


What Happens When You Don’t Have Enough

A depleted ceramide barrier doesn’t fail all at once. It gives you a series of signals.

Transepidermal water loss (TEWL) increases — water evaporates out of the skin because the barrier can’t hold it. You reach for moisturizer more often, but nothing seems to last.

Skin feels tight after cleansing. Not in a refreshed way — in a ‘my face is shrinking’ way. That’s barrier damage responding to something as simple as water and cleanser.

Redness and sensitivity creep in. Products that were fine before start to sting. Your skin reacts to things that shouldn’t be irritating.

Eczema flares. The connection between ceramide deficiency and eczema (atopic dermatitis) is well-established — people with eczema have measurably lower ceramide concentrations in their skin than those without it.

Adult acne that isn’t hormonal. A compromised barrier lets in more environmental bacteria and irritants, and the resulting inflammation can look like acne without fitting any hormonal or dietary pattern.

How to Restore Ceramides

When you read a moisturizer label, look for these specific names: ‘ceramide NP’ (also called ceramide 3), ‘ceramide AP’ (ceramide 6-II), and ‘ceramide EOP’ (ceramide 1). These are the most researched forms and the most effective in clinical barrier repair studies.

Ceramides work best when paired with their lipid partners — cholesterol and fatty acids (like linoleic acid or palmitic acid). The skin barrier is made of all three in roughly a 3:1:1 ratio. A product that contains all three will outperform one that contains only ceramides.

Format matters too. Cream moisturizers deliver ceramides more effectively than serums — the emollient base helps ceramides integrate into the lipid matrix. If you’re using a water-thin serum as your ceramide source, you’re getting some benefit, but a ceramide-rich cream as your moisturizer is the higher-impact choice.


Layering and Timing

Ceramide moisturizers are among the most flexible products in any routine. Here’s where they fit:

Apply after your actives. If you’re using vitamin C, retinol, AHAs, or niacinamide, those go on first (closest to skin), then your ceramide moisturizer goes on top to seal everything in.

Use them morning and night. There’s no time-of-day limitation. Ceramides are repairing and neutral — no photosensitivity, no pH sensitivity, no conflict with other ingredients.

They’re compatible with everything. Retinol users especially benefit from a ceramide moisturizer on top — it helps counteract the barrier disruption that retinol can cause during the adjustment period. Same goes for anyone using chemical exfoliants regularly. Ceramides support the barrier that acids can compromise.


Who Needs Them Most

Ceramides aren’t just for people with visible skin problems. But some groups have the most to gain:

  • Over-exfoliators — if you’re using acids or retinoids more than 2-3x per week, ceramides are part of what you’re depleting with each session
  • Harsh-cleanser users — that tight, squeaky-clean feeling after washing is a warning sign
  • Dry and sensitive skin types — almost certainly already low on ceramides
