Skincare Routine Order: Why You're Probably Applying Products Wrong

A dry skin routine isn't just about heavy cream. Layer humectants first, then emollients, then occlusives — here's why the order matters and what to use.
Your skin feels tight five minutes after washing your face. You've tried every moisturizer. Nothing sticks.
You're not imagining it, and you're not doing something obviously wrong. You might just be skipping a step — or applying things in the wrong order. Here's what's actually going on and how to fix it.
Dry skin isn't just skin that needs more cream. It's a skin type defined by a compromised moisture barrier — specifically, a lack of natural moisturizing factors (NMFs) like amino acids and urea that help your skin hold water.
The result is faster water loss. Dermatologists call this transepidermal water loss (TEWL) — water evaporating out of your skin faster than it can be replenished. That's what causes tightness, flaking, and that dull, papery look.
This is different from dehydrated skin, which anyone can have. Dehydration is temporary — caused by weather, diet, air travel, or a single harsh product. Dry skin is a type, not a condition. It's structural, and it needs a routine built around it.
Most people with dry skin make the same mistakes — and get stuck in a cycle that doesn't improve.
Harsh cleansers (especially foaming ones with SLS) strip the barrier and send TEWL into overdrive. Every wash makes the problem worse. Skipping toner — or worse, using an alcohol-based astringent — removes whatever moisture is left.
The biggest mistake: applying one thick cream directly to dry skin with nothing underneath. Heavy creams are occlusives — they seal in moisture. But if there's no moisture to seal in, they sit on the surface and peel off by mid-morning. Without the foundation layer, even the richest cream won't stick.
A good dry skin routine uses three types of ingredients in a specific order: humectants → emollients → occlusives. Each layer sets up the next.
Humectants draw water into your skin from the environment (or from deeper layers). Apply them first, to damp skin.
Emollients fill the gaps between skin cells, smoothing texture and reinforcing the barrier.
Occlusives seal everything in by forming a protective film on the surface.
The order is non-negotiable: lightest to heaviest. Humectant → emollient → occlusive. Apply your HA serum before your ceramide moisturizer, not after.
Keep it in this order every morning. Resist the urge to add more products — layering badly is worse than fewer steps done correctly.
PM is your repair window. Your barrier rebuilds while you sleep, so give it the materials it needs.
If your skin is severely dry or your barrier is damaged, add slugging 1–2 nights per week. Apply a thin layer of pure petrolatum (Vaseline) as your absolute last step — on top of your ceramide cream. It forms an airtight seal and prevents any moisture from escaping overnight.
It's not for everyone (avoid if you're acne-prone), but for dry skin, it's one of the most effective — and cheapest — interventions you can add.
